Is Fluoride in Municipal Water Systems a Good Idea?

Winnipeg Dentist - Dr Mitch Vodrey on FluoridationMore Than 100 Government Agencies And National & International Professional Health Organizations Support Water Fluoridation.

These agencies include the World Health Organization, the U.S. Centres for Disease Control & Prevention, Health Canada and both the Canadian & American Dental Association among others.  They all agreed that adding fluoride to drinking water at recommended levels ( 0.7 mg per litre of water ) reduces tooth decay.  In Canada, trials proving this date back to 1945 in Brantford, Ontario.  Over 50 years of extensive worldwide research has demonstrated the safety & effectiveness of water fluoridation in reducing the incidence of dental decay.

Today in Manitoba almost 95% of the population supplied by a public water supply source receive fluoridated water.  Fluoride works both topically and systemically to prevent tooth decay by increasing the resistance of tooth enamel to dental decay.  Fluoride has been proven over & over again to reduce dental decay in children by approximately 18 – 40%.

With every $1.00 spent on adding fluoride to the public water supply it is estimated that $38.00 is saved in the cost of dental treatment.

Concerns by some suggest that water fluoridation is toxic and harmful.  There is NO sound evidence to support these allegations.  The recommended level of fluoride added to the water supply has a built-in margin of safety that takes into consideration the use of fluoride from other sources on the most vulnerable age group in the population ( 22 – 36 months ).  Said additions of fluoride do not cause adverse health effects (such as cancer or a risk for bone fractures).

Of the thousands of credible scientific studies on fluoridation, none has shown health problems associated with the consumption of optimally fluoridated water.  Water fluoridation not only allows fluoride uptake by  the enamel of the unerupted developing teeth but also provides fluoride uptake by the enamel of erupted teeth through saliva.

Not all countries provide their citizens with fluoride through water fluoridation.  Instead, many countries choose to fluoridate their salt or milk instead.  Other examples of additives used to achieve population wide health benefits include :

1)  Iodine added to table salt to prevent thyroid disease

2)  Vitamin D added to milk or juice to prevent rickets

3)  Folic Acid added to flour to prevent birth defects

Although water fluoridation has been proven to benefit all residents of the community, the population that MOST benefits are the seniors and the hardest to reach poor for whom other preventative measures may not be accessible.

Dental disease is the number one chronic disease among children and adolescents in North America.  Water fluoridation is the most important public health measure used to effectively and inexpensively counteract the disease!

Why Choose a Pediatric Dentist vs a Family Dentist For Your Kids Dental Needs

teething - a painful timeA parent will always want what is best for their child, and with oral hygiene it is no different. It is vital to practice good oral hygiene from when teeth are first developed, and in fact it is recommended that a child should be taken for their first dental visit before their first birthday. Whilst it may be convenient to take your child to your own dentist, it may be more beneficial for them to visit a specialist children’s dentist.

Pediatric Dentists Complete Extra Education

You can feel confident that your child is safe in the hands of a pediatric dentist, as they are required to study for two to three years beyond their general dentistry course to become fully qualified. This is due to the fact that a pediatric dentist must become proficient at child psychology in order to be able to interact with children in a way which is enjoyable and educational.

Pediatric Dentist’s Offices Are Designed Just for Kids

This is an important benefit to taking your child to see a pediatric dentist. Children are often scared of visiting the dentist, but a children’s dentist is specifically trained to relax them and put their minds at ease. They will go out of their way to make the visit a fun experience for the child by offering incentives such as stickers for regular brushing. Often the waiting room itself will be designed with a child in mind. It will be painted in bright colors with toys available for the children to play with as they wait.

Pediatric Dentists Will Help Your Kids To Prevent Tooth Decay

Another benefit of visiting a specialist children’s dentist is that they will be able to instruct your child on the best way to care for their teeth. The prevention of tooth decay in children is one of the most important aspects of a pediatric dentist’s job. They will be trained to communicate the importance of oral hygiene to children in a way which is fun and easy to understand. This is especially important in younger children, as if bad oral hygiene habits are developed early on in life they are much harder to break later on, often resulting in a lifetime of poor dental health.

A Pediatric Dentist Will Follow Your Children Through Adolescence

A children’s dentist will care for your child’s dental needs from when they grow their first baby teeth right through to adolescence, and they will be able to advise you on many different aspects of oral health. For younger children they will monitor how teeth are growing to aid with speech development, whilst for older children they can warn of the dangers of eating too much sugar and the benefits of a nutritional diet in general. For adolescents they may need to explain how smoking can negatively impact on oral health.

Although taking your child to a general dentist will ensure they maintain good oral health, they will not receive the same level of care and attention as they would at a specialist children’s dentist, where an environment is created to make sure that they are relaxed and have fun. Building a good relationship with a pediatric dentist early on in life will ensure that your child has the education necessary to maintain a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums.

In this video Dr Mitch Vodrey a Winnipeg Pediatric Dentist discusses simple things that parents can do to stop crying babies that are in pain from teething

There are many things suggested to reduce teething pain in babies that are teething

Some of these are safe and some should be avoided

Washcloths For Teething Pain Relief

teething - a painful time

Why a washcloth you might ask? Wash cloths can be easily moved even when

frozen. Yes, frozen. Not only do they thaw out quickly, but they remain

cold longer and feel good on your baby’s gums. They also will soak up some

of the excess saliva.  To utilize this inexpensive idea you would get a clean

wash cloth wet and stick it in the freezer. Once it is frozen enough for  you just give it to your baby

Teething is not something that is fun for babies, or parents either.

Thankfully it only lasts a short time and most of the time you get a break

between teeth. Doing the best you can to keep your baby comfortable and happy is all that you can do.

Why Are Baby Teeth So Important and When Should You Wean a Baby? – Winnipeg Childrens Dentist

Pediatric Dentistry is a dental specialty that concentrates its attention on infants and childrens providing preventive and therapeutic oral health care.
In Winnipeg there are many childrens dentists to choose from but not all of them have the extra training required to be called a Pediatric Dentist
During your childrens “growth” phase, special approaches are needed to guide the childrens dental growth and development in order to avoid future dental problems. According to Dr Mitch Vodrey DDS
a Winnipeg childrens Pediatric Dental Specialist this is the most important time to see a childrens dentist
A common question that parents ask is “why spend money on the maintenance of their childrens baby teeth  when they are to be eventually replaced by their permanent teeth?”

Your Childrens Baby (Milk) teeth are as important as the permanent ones because:

  • Milk teeth serve as space maintainers for the proper spacing and alignment of the permanent teeth.
  • Healthy milk teeth are crucial in helping the baby learn how to speak properly.
  • Baby teeth are important in proper feeding and nutrition.
  • Healthy looking teeth are important in building self-confidence at an early age. Small children because of immaturity are quick to tease peers about ugly looking or decayed teeth.

Childrens Baby Bottle Tooth Decay

This term describes a dental condition which involves the rapid decay of many or all the baby teeth of an infant or child. The teeth most likely to be damaged are the upper front teeth since they are the first teeth to erupt and thus have the longest exposure time to the sugars in the feeding bottle. The lower front teeth tend to be protected by the tongue as the child sucks on the nipple of the bottle or the breast.
Baby Bottle Tooth Decay is caused by long exposure of a child’s teeth to liquid containing sugars generally when the baby falls asleep with a bottle containing milk or juice or a pacifier dipped in honey. The liquid pools around the front teeth. During sleep, the bacteria living in every baby’s mouth, turns the milk sugar or other sugars to acid which causes the decay.
